The 2024 Tacoma is not a simple facelift. Instead, it represents a ground-up redesign, leveraging the shared TNGA-F global truck platform utilized by Tundra and Sequoia.

Specifically designed and engineered for the U.S. market, the fourth-generation Tacoma comes packed with numerous off-road features and a pair of potent turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains, including a class-leading i-FORCE MAX hybrid. The all-new Trailhunter grade first showcased as a concept at the 2022 SEMA show, offers a purpose-built overlanding rig right from the dealership.

The Genesis of the New Tacoma

Robust and Ready

Tacoma’s architecture utilizes high-strength steel, improving rigidity, while the use of aluminum in the upper body reduces weight. Frame cross members have been reinforced, and the roof now includes integrated attachment holes for the addition of roof rack rails across all models.

Power and Performance

Two new turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains bolster Tacoma’s performance. Entry-level SR grades get an engine outputting 228 horsepower and 243 lb.-ft. of torque. Higher-tier models, in conjunction with an eight-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, enjoy a bump to 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. of torque.

Toyota has also brought the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain into the mid-size, body-on-frame pickup segment. It combines a 2.4-liter engine with a 48-hp electric motor, producing a total system output of 326 horsepower and an astounding 465 lb.-ft. of torque.

Enhanced Ride and Handling

Significant improvements in ride and handling are evident in the 2024 Tacoma. A fully redesigned multi-link coil rear suspension offers better handling, while four-wheel disc brakes increase braking performance. The electric power steering provides an improved steering feel and incorporates additional safety and convenience features.

Adventurer at Heart

The Tacoma isn’t just about work; it’s equally at home on the trail. The truck now features suspensions tuned specifically to each grade, from the sporty red TRD sport-tuned shocks to the TRD Off-Road grade’s monotube Bilstein remote reservoir shocks, and the Limited grade’s Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system.

The maximum towing capacity stands at 6,500 lbs. on SR5 i-FORCE and TRD PreRunner XtraCab grades, with a maximum payload of 1,709 lbs. on TRD Off-Road. This versatility is complemented by innovative features like a 7-percent increase in bed volume, an available power open and close aluminum tailgate, and an integrated high-output air compressor in the bed for quick tire inflation.

USB-C data and charging ports are conveniently located throughout the cabin. Additionally, over-the-air updates ensure your vehicle’s technology is always up-to-date.

Safety First

Tacoma also offers the most comprehensive safety suite in the segment – Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0). It incorporates new functions, including Risk Awareness Vehicle Communication, Evasive Steering Assist, and Front Cross Traffic Alert, providing an unprecedented level of assistance to drivers.
